For the private pilot certificate, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires the following:
- be a citizen of the United States (or obtain approval from the Transportation Security Administration) - obtain a Class III medical (from an FAA Medical examiner) - be proficient with English language (speak, read, write) - applicant must be at least 17 years old (16 years old to solo) - obtain a minimum of 40 hours of flight training (including solo time) - pass the FAA private pilot written examination - pass a practical flight test with an FAA designated examiner
